Foundation Inspired By Young Local Resident's Unexpected Death
San Pasqual residents Makayla "Kayla" Castro and Simone Aldern were pals from kindergarten through high school. They were destined to be close friends forever, a relationship they did not expect to change when they went their separate ways to college. Kayla, a scholar athlete graduate of San Pasqual High, enrolled at Grand Canyon Unversity in Phoenix while Simone stayed in the San Diego area to go to UC San Diego . One day in April 2016, Aldern learned Kayla was in a coma after being seriously hurt from a hiking fall. Read more.
San Pasqual High School Retires
Kayla's Field Hockey Jersey #10 On November 2016, San Pasqual High School retired Kayla's field hockey jersey #10. Kayla's field hockey coach, Nikki Gannon beautifully presented the Live Like Kayla Award to Lauren Leisten (SPHS '19). Lauren most exemplified Kayla's passion, integrity, hard work, leadership and kindness. We are so grateful to San Pasqual High School, the coaches and the amazing field hockey team for honoring Kayla and providing this annual award. In turn the foundation will provide Lauren with a $1000 collage scholarship. We intend to provide this scholarship each and every year to the recipient of this school award.
Field hockey was one of Kayla's loves. The coaches and teammates were immensely important to her and she had so much love and pride in being a part of the San Pasqual team. We know how grateful Kayla was for the experience and for the friendship she developed over the years and we know she would be so humbled by this honor. We thank everyone involved for providing our family with this tribute to Kayla. |
Live Like Kayla Foundation Provides a Scholarships to Hume Lake Christian Camp
The young lady we sent last year wrote this “Our family income is very low so paying for Hume Lake is 100% impossible to do. I would like to go to Hume Lake because I want to get to know more and more about God and get to grow in my relationship with him. I also want to be able to tell others about God and be in a Christian environment where I focus on God the whole time. Please help me get to Hume Lake” Making a difference and she came back inspired!
